About the Event
In 1529, Florence was besieged by imperial troops, backed by Medici Pope Clement VII.
In her talk, Dr. O’Brien explores this pivotal event, highlighting Michelangelo’s efforts to defend Florence and its treasures, the sacrifices of its citizens, and the enduring memory of the siege in art, literature, and history.

About the Speaker
Dr. Emily O’Brien received her PhD in History in the spring of 2005. Though Canadian born, she considers Italy to be her true intellectual home. Her central field of research is the Italian Renaissance, and her particular focus is fifteenth-century humanism, politics, and the papacy. She is an Associate Professor of History in the Global Humanities Department at Simon Fraser University and the author of The Commentaries of Pope Pius II (1458-1464) and the Crisis of the Fifteenth Century Papacy (UTP).

This event is organized by the Dante Alighieri Society of BC in Vancouver in collaboration with SFU’s Graduate Liberal Studies and under the patronage of the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver.

About the Event
Join us for a historical tour of Venice and its hidden treasures with Dr. Luisa Canuto, teacher in the Italian Studies program at the University of British Columbia.
About the Speaker
Dr. Luisa Canuto is teaching full-time at the French, Hispanic and Italian Studies Department. She has acquired graduate degrees in disciplines ranging from History to publishing to second language acquisition and teaching. Each degree reflects her diverse passions and learning interests — Italian and Venetian Medieval and Renaissance history, journalism and teaching and learning theories and best practices.

About the Speaker
Alessandro Marzo Magno, giornalista e veneziano itinerante ora di stanza a Milano, da tempo si dedica alla divulgazione storica. Ha scritto o curato diciassette libri, tra i quali L’invenzione dei soldi. Quando la finanza parlava italiano (Garzanti) e Con Stile. Come l'Italia ha vestito (e svestito) il mondo (Garzanti).
