The Dante Alighieri Society of BC, in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Toronto, the UBC School of Music and the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver, presents a recital by Italian classical guitarist Carlo Fierens.

Described as “one of the most engaging artists of the guitar nowadays” (Ricardo Iznaola), Carlo Fierens will perform in a recital featuring music composed by Niccolò Paganini, the legendary Italian violinist who cherished the guitar, for which he also composed. Along with music by Paganini, the program will also present music inspired by the famous violinist, including pieces by Romantic guitar prodigy Giulio Regondi, a pastiche written by 20th-century Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Kevin Callahan’s contemporary “Red Fantasy”, whose sparkling brilliancy directly recalls the essence of Romantic music.

The harmonious sounds of the classical guitar will guide us through a concert filled with a diversity of emotions, much in the spirit of the musician who got to be known as “the Devil’s Violinist”.

Performer, musicologist and educator, Carlo Fierens has won numerous prizes in international competitions – most notably, the Alirio Diaz competition in Rome, the Indianapolis Matinée Musicale, and the National Prize for the Arts in Italy. He has performed in many countries across Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia, and in prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.
